I've been having something of an "Is it just me?" feeling about Vance for a few months now, and I had to get that off my chest.Chrishttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04072272223837426211noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8346997917591558747.post-11813680201703057192009-07-24T22:22:11.824+01:002009-07-24T22:22:11.824+01:00As you have correctly recognized the Gray Mouser&#...As you have correctly recognized the Gray Mouser's place as superior to Cugel, I shall not whaarrrgarble at you.E.G.Palmerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10229893317543621720noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8346997917591558747.post-45196890731733192092009-07-24T21:29:37.120+01:002009-07-24T21:29:37.120+01:00I'm in the middle.
I love the first Dying Ear...I'm in the middle.

I love the first Dying Earth book, but I don't like the other three. (That's all the Vance I've read.)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8346997917591558747.post-12516086358893380422009-07-24T19:01:57.211+01:002009-07-24T19:01:57.211+01:00Down with Disc World!

Seems you've identified exactly what the Dying Earth is about, all the waiting around since there's nothing worth achieving, the whole decadence of the setting. I rather think you're disliking it for what it is. Which is, of course, perfectly fine :)

For God's sake though stay away from his Ports of Call - a novel that reads like a Traveller scenario in which absolutely nothing at all happens - I strongly suspect you'd hate it.

Anyway not as controversal as I thought it was going to be after the first couple of sentences :) wait until if and when I ever pluck up the courage do my blog post which I suppose I should call "Heresy on the Discworld" :)Coopdevilhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16219253658967958289noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8346997917591558747.post-18425049201563800262009-07-24T15:41:16.101+01:002009-07-24T15:41:16.101+01:00Cugel just an unsympathetic schlub to whom things ...Cugel just an unsympathetic schlub to whom things happen in a series of episodic, disconnected vignettes. He draws no conclusions and gains no wisdom from his circumstances, and walks heddlessly into situations which a supposedly cunning roguish character would deftly avoid.

I think you simply didn't get it: you expected EPIC, but DE stories are about human buffonery and human failures.
They are comedicartikidhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17474295473142339717noreply@blogger.com
